5 S Concept

To a key member team of 40 including teaching and non-teaching staff, 5S concept session was initiated by the SLT. The basic need for 5S, what 5S is, how can we apply at home, classroom and school campus atmosphere was insisted. The other points were as shown below:
What are the 5S’
Sort (Seiri) – Seiri is sorting through all items in a location and removing all unnecessary items from the location
Set In Order (Seiton) – Seiton is putting all necessary items in the optimal place for fulfilling their function in the workplace.
Shine (Seiso) – Seiso is sweeping or cleaning and inspecting the workplace, tools and machinery on a regular basis.
Standardize (Seiketsu) – Seiketsu is to standardize the processes used to sort, order and clean the workplace.
Sustain/Self-discipline (Shitsuke) – Shitsuke or sustain the developed processes by self-discipline of the workers. Also translates as “do without being told”.
Benefits of 5S
Improved profits – Reduce costs, streamline labor costs, and improve quality.
More efficient workforce – Make work easier with standard procedures. What needs to happen, happens.
Safer workplace – Improve safety by keeping your workplace clean and organized.
Fewer defects – Reduce errors and defects by making it easier to identify and solve problems.
Better communication – Ensure the workforce has the information it needs to operate efficiently
Requirement for implementing :
The requirement would be training employees, cleaning and organizing workplace and getting tools and
supplies (like labeling, floor making, shelving, etc)

By adopting 5 S methodology, Team QMIS ensures to make a commitment towards safety, organization and effectiveness for an increase in the overall success though there may be difficulties to start with during the implementation process.
It was a fruitful learning experience.
